AICE Annual Australian Film Festival (15 June - 8 July 2008)

The Australian Embassy in Tel Aviv is proud to continue its support of the Australian Israel Cultural Exchange (AICE) Australian Film Festival in Israel. We welcome you to this year’s celebration of Australian cinematic excellence in Sderot, Jerusalem, Tel Aviv, Haifa and Rosh Pina.

The films selected for this year’s festival offer a creative insight into Australian history, culture, identity and people. The films explore some of the challenges and opportunities that Australia’s sophisticated and internationally focused economy and society have brought to its rural and urban communities. They offer a snapshot of the diversity and intricacies of Australian life, landscape and our history.

We are excited to be able to share with our Israeli friends this feast of Australian artistic enterprise and we look forward to joining you for a sample of Australia’s international award winning film industry through the productions selected by AICE for this, the fifth annual festival. We applaud AICE for their outstanding contribution in fostering cultural dialogue and exchange between Israel and Australia.

For additional information on films and festival dates in June and July 2008 please refer to the AICE website: http://www.aicec.org/

ANZAC DAY

On 25 April, the Embassy held a traditional dawn service at the Commonwealth War Graves Cemetery on Mt. Scops, Jerusalem. The event was attended by around 250 guests, including members of the diplomatic community, Israeli dignitaries, community organisations and Australian and New Zealand expatriates. Members of the Australian and New Zealand defence forces serving in the Multinational Force and  Observers in the Sinai provided a catafalque party. A feature this year was the presence of an honour guard by an ADF contingent visiting Israel to take part in the opening of the Park of the Australian Soldier in Be'er Sheva. A breakfast reception was hosted afterwards by the United Nations Truce Supervision Organisation at the spectacular Government House headquaters. The event provided an important opportunity to remember the contribution of ANZAC troops in the region from WW1 until today.

The Australian Embassy Tel Aviv is proud to support the current edition of Picnic Magazine. Featuring the works of 12 Australian artists, the Magazine is a text-free publication devoted to contemporary art. Produced in Israel, the current edition of the Magazine is a collaborative Israel-Australia project aimed at building cultural dialogue between our two societies.

Australia and Israel enjoy a growing cultural exchange, which is underpinned by strong people-to-people links and efforts by key cultural partners, including the Australia Israel Cultural Exchange (AICE) to strengthen cultural interactions between our two countries.

As the pieces featured in Picnic Magazine reflect, Australian visual arts are increasingly global in vision and activity and Australian artists, both indigenous and non-indigenous are enjoying unprecedented levels of international attention and recognition.
