CLASS 419 (SABBATICAL) VISITING ACADEMIC TEMPORARY RESIDENCE VISA TO AUSTRALIA
Thank you for interest in a Subclass 419 (Visiting Academic) temporary visa to Australia.
Visa 419 is intended for academics whose primary purpose of stay is to observe or participate (without remuneration other than for living expenses and travel costs) in research projects at the invitation of an Australian tertiary institution or research organisation.
The visa is not intended for academics who will receive remuneration [e.g. a fellowship, salary, stipend, grant, scholarship, award or allowance (other than for living expenses/travel costs) from an Australian institution. Such persons should, as appropriate to their circumstances,
be assessed against visa 418 Educational; or apply for a Student visa.
If applicable, please include your spouse and dependent child/children under 18 in the same application. Only one fee is required.
Please note that in order to make a valid application you must provide evidence that a nomination/sponsorship has been lodged on your behalf in Australia. Usually, this will be in the form of a letter or email from the Department of Immigration and Citizenship in Australia confirming that a nomination/sponsorship application has been lodged on your behalf. Without lodging this evidence at the time of application, your application will be invalid and must be refused.
The application must be lodged, together with the following:
1- Application form (form 147)
2- Processing fee paid by postal or bank cheques only, payable to the Australian Embassy. Cash and credit cards are not acceptable.
See: Charges. Please do not send cash by mail. We cannot be responsible for the loss of any cash sent by mail. Please note fees and charges will increase for applications received on or after 1 January 2010.
3- A copy of the invitation from the university in Australia. The invitation should come from the person with overall administrative authority within the institution (ie from the Registrar, Chief Executive Officer or equivalent central administrative authority of the relevant institution). A letter of invitation from the area within the institution (such as an individual faculty, department or school in which you intend to conduct your research) is not acceptable. The letter of invitation should indicate
• the period for which the invitation is extended
• details of your proposed activities in Australia and
• the nature and amount of any proposed payments by the institution to you. If are not receiving any remuniration the letter should clearly indicate this
4- A letter from your employer confirming your sabbatical and salary arrangements during leave
5- One passport photograph for each person included in the application; and
6- Your valid passport/s.
7- Evidence of health insurance for the duration of your stay in Australia. This may be in the form of a letter from your health fund, your travel agent or credit card compnay confirming that you have full health insurance for the duration of your stay in Australia. The dates of your proposed stay in Australia should be indicated in the letter.
Additional documents/information may be requested after initial assessment of your application.
The application form and supporting documents may be lodged via your travel agent or by registered mail. If you send your application and passport/s by registered mail, your passport/s will be delivered back to you door to door in most Israeli cities. The cost of the delivery is NIS60 paid cash at the time of delivery. If you live in a remote location such as the West Bank, you would have to collect your passport/s from the nearest office of "Aviv Shigur".

If you have any dependent children, please note that you may have to pay for the full cost of their education in Australia. You are advised to check with the Education Authority in the state or territory where your dependants will be educated for further information.
Please do not finalise your affairs in this country or make final travel arrangements until you receive written advice from our office that your visas have been granted and you receive your passport back from our office. The processing of the application would normally take seven work days. However, please lodge your application at least 2-3 weeks prior to travel.
